The material in this section is confidential in nature and is intended for the sole use of the individual in charge of the investigation. The purpose of an investigation is to study by close examination and systematic inquiry so as to determine and reveal the facts surrounding a specific instance such as theft. There are two common mistakes businesses make when theft is suspected: 1) Procrastination and taking no action against a suspect means theft will continue, or 2) Taking action against a suspect without an appropriately planned investigation ruins your best chance to deal with a thief. When you suspect theft, begin the investigation and be patient! Watch for a pattern to develop to prove intent. Develop strategies that fit the circumstances of the theft and use the Theft Incident Pattern (T.I.P) charts and Suspect Data Profile sheets to narrow down the list of suspects. These will be used throughout the five elements of a proper investigation which are to Secure, Observe, Listen, Identify, and Document, or use a S.O.L.I.D. investigative procedure. A S.O.L.I.D. investigation will help you avoid common mistakes such as overreaction, premature confrontation, destroying morale, insufficient evidence, invasion of privacy, entrapment, and/or alerting the thief.
