This module deals with the threat external theft poses to your business. In many ways the attitude and motive of a shoplifter is very similar to the internal thief, but shoplifters must be dealt with in a different manner. There are two main kinds of shoplifters: professional shoplifters who steal for a living, and amateur shoplifters who steal when the desire for an item coincides with the opportunity to take it. There are noticeable behavior red flags displayed by a shoplifter. If these signs are recognized early, the shoplifter can often be easily deterred and it is unlikely that the thief will return any time soon. Deterrence of a shoplifter is always preferable, but if an apprehension is inevitable, make sure that you are in compliance with the three phases of the Merchant's Privilege to avoid a "bad stop." Once the shoplifter has been successfully apprehended, it is critical that the incident be processed correctly. You must conduct a proper investigation, write an accurate report, and make sure you do not violate the rights of the shoplifter. As always, simulation is the best way to prepare for these types of events. Employee Theft---Decision Making Basics---Analyzing
